Who's Out There?

Country Breakdown

There are a few clear leaders in terms of quantity of satellites assessed. The top three countries are the United States, Russia, and China. The combination accounted for 67% of satellites within the data set. The next closest country, France, had approximately half of China, which created a clear divide.

All the other countries in the data set had less than 100 satellites, and most had less than 10. Furthermore, countries that fell between 10 and 100 were primarily multinational partnerships or European countries.

  • United States: 423
  • Russia: 126
  • China: 112

Most companies on this graph represent 6.3% or less of the total companies who are controlling satellites.

  • United States: 46.23%

User Domain Analysis

The majority of satellites are classified for single use industry, and the leading industry is commercial. It's important to note that military and government account for over half of all satellites when all split categories are added.

The top 3 countries dwarf everyone else (83 others!) in most categories. The few exceptions include comparable Government satellites, and more Civil satellites by countries in the other category.

    Overall:
  • Communications: 39%
  • Government: 20%
  • Military: 17%
